Data Set 2: Biogeography & Fossil Record

Extant members of the genus Fagus Tourn. ex L. are disjunctly distributed throughout the northern hemisphere (see above). Some Asian species like F. hayate, F. japonica, F. lucida, and F. longipetiolata, are restricted to a few localities, while others are dominant components of broad-leaved deciduous forests. Although sparse, fossil Fagus remains can be traced back at least to the Oligocene with a similar global distribution (see below).
